I have many trees in my garden and Hemlock is one of my favourite.
Eastern hemlock are coniferous trees that have flat needles, dark green above and light green below.
Branches are slender and they look somehow delicate on young trees.
I trim mine in late winter so they nice and full. They move beautifully in the wind.
Eastern hemlocks are shade tolerant and thrive in acidic soils in moist, but will grow in fun sun also. They are slow to establish but when they do, they will grow to 30 m high tree.
In the winter months, the canopy of the tree shields the ground below from the snow, and provide a habitat for ruffed grouse, wild turkey and larger browsing fauna such as white-tailed deer.
Two years ago I added to my shade garden Tsuga canadensis Pendula , the little tree is completely covered by snow know so I can’t take a picture. But you can see its beauty at www.thesitegardener.com .
The gracefully pendulous branches and fine textured foliage of Tsuga C Pendula will be a focal point of my shade garden in few years.
