Days are short and its getting to be very cold outside. Most of the plants are gone but grasses are still beautiful. My favorite is Miscanthus family. The are warm season grasses, they start to grow and of May and are in the full glory in August and September. Miscanthus doesn’t need much, full sun and average soil. I have them growing in dry setting and in the areas flooded in the spring. I even try then in light shade.
I recommend to split them every 3-4 years, its hard to split big clumps. For few years I use an axe to split the grasses
Don’t over fertilize your grasses, grasses actually prefer to be grown on the lean side. They will be sturdier without the addition of the high-powered nutrients. Fast growing ornamental grasses will be unable to hold themselves up. Result – floppy plants. Ornamental grasses, need to be well watered after planting .
I love the colour and the movement of the grasses in the wind. The are wonderful addition to winter landscape . I usually cut them back in the April.
We sell 2 gal pots of field grown plants for $ 10 a pot.
