Grasses – Miscanthus

Days are short and its getting to be very cold outside. Most of the plants are gone but grasses are still beautiful. My favorite  is Miscanthus family. The are warm season grasses, they start to grow and of May and are in the full glory in August and September. Miscanthus doesn’t need much, full sun and average soil. I have them growing in dry setting and in the areas flooded in the spring. I even try then in light shade.

I recommend to split them every 3-4 years, its hard to split big clumps. For few years I use an axe to split the grasses

Don’t  over fertilize your grasses,  grasses actually prefer to be grown on the lean side. They will be sturdier without the addition of the high-powered nutrients.  Fast growing ornamental grasses will be unable to hold themselves up. Result – floppy plants. Ornamental grasses, need to be well watered after planting .

I love the colour and the movement of the grasses in the wind. The are wonderful addition to winter landscape . I usually cut them back in the April.

We sell 2 gal pots of field grown plants for $ 10 a pot.

Cold hardy cactus-Opuntia polyacantha

Opuntia polyacantha is one of my favorite cacti. Big pads, lots of spines and big, beautiful flowers. It’s very hardy and looks good in the spring. Its also easy to start from seed. That’s how I started mine.

I ordered 1 pack of pink flower Opuntia polyacantha. After 3 years my patch in the sand garden had pink, raspberry, yellow and almost white flowers. So, there is a question, did I got mix of seeds or its just result of cross pollination?

Any way, I am very happy with the results, as are my customers.

On the picture the most popular colour, dusty pink. It is stunning.Op pol dusty pink

Magnolia macrophylla subsp. Ashei

Magnolia macrophylla subsp. Ashei

magnolia-ashei1-768x1024

This spreading deciduous shrub or small tree has large, light-green glossy leaves to 2 feet long. It flowers in early summer with jasmine- and citrus-scented blossoms in white with maroon markings at the base. Each flower is up to 10 inches across. It grows up to 20 feet tall and wide and is a native of North America.
Grow in moist, well-drained, preferably acidic to neutral soil, in sun or partial shade; they do not tolerate wet feet. Magnolia flower buds are susceptible to late-season frosts,  so plant it in a sheltered  location.
Prune in late winter or late summer to prevent bleeding of sap; prune minimally to maintain a healthy framework.
We only have two Ashei for sale . When I saw them at the  trade show,  I new I had to have one!  Not just for the flowers, the foliage on them is magnificent.  So, if you have acre or two this is a specimen for you. Zone 5,6 and up. Since recommendation for planting zone varies from one  website to another I would planted Ashei in a sheltered zone 5 .

magnolia from seeds

I have few  different magnolias in my garden( zone 4-5) and so far all of them are growing,  and every year I have blooms.
There are two I started from seeds and it  took about 10 years for first blooms.
I know this is a long time to wait but it passed very quickly. I don’t  remember the name but I do love the flowers in the spring and over all appearance in summer,  and that is what is important.

On the picture: flowers on the magnolia from seeds. We have few whips potted for this year.

Juniperu conferta All Gold

This cultivar is a golden form of Shore Juniper. Low spreading shrub with bright golden yellow long-needled foliage, developing slight bronze overtones in winter. Juniperus conferta All Gold

This is an evergreen groundcover that grows to 6” in height and a spread of 6’ at full maturity. It forms a flat carpet that roots as the original plant spreads out in a circular fashion.

Most of junipers are quite prickly, this one is soft and  pleasant to the touch.

I have one growing for  two years in my rockery, full sun, not too much water us I depend on mother nature.

Donkey tail

Donkey Tail is a common name for  Euphorbia myrsinites, which is a lovely little rock garden plant. It has evergreen foliage with a hint of blue, and grows bunches of yellow flowers in the spring.

If you let the seeds develop, you may have a problem. Donkey Tail plants seed profusely. About two weeks ago I weeded around 200 of them. It was so hot that I wiped the sweat from my face and got some of the sap on my face. Within minutes my face and lips were burning terribly. It took around 15 minutes under running cold water to wash it off, but I was lucky to not get it in my eyes as the sap can cause temporary blindness. After two days the burning feeling had cleared completely, but I strongly suggest using gloves whenever you handle this plant.

Happy planting!
